I was just looking up the official first 'basic' pc requirments needed for Windows Vista and apparently they recommend you have a dvd player that can also write. Why?
I dont see the point. Infact I dont see much point in them now. All I can think is that u might want it to record tv if broadband becomes a hell of a lot cheaper and probably quicker.
Now people only use dvd r/w on their pcs to record their camcorder stuff..what else would you use it for?
Its not that Im against actually buying one..they're cheap enough, I just dont see much point :S

I'm going to guess that they have a built in dvd burning utility...like they did for cd/rw in XP!!!

Some people like to back up their dvd movies...and if you need to back up large files or portions of your hard drive...dvds are cheap and easy!!!!

I use mine for mass storage as roger said above,( 4~8gb on a DVD is very handy ) they have most likely put a DVD writer in the specs list as when Vista becomes available in Q4 2006 they will be the norm.

Just like XP has a min specs list... but you can get away with much less.
