I just got a new western digital external HD and media player. I was wondering if anyone could let me know what kind of ripping and shrinking software to use with this setup.

    Try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/WinX_DVD_Ripper_d6190.html
It's a freeware DVD ripper that will copy your DVD collection to smaller formats like AVI, MKV, etc. They have a paid version that has even more features, but give the free one a go first and see if it suits your needs.

I find DVD Decrypter, though no longer supported, to be very good. If you are wanting to make archival copies on a standard 4.7 gig DVD, then DVD Shrink is also fairly awesome. Imgburn is useful for doing the actual burn... my dos centavos.

Freebies: Shrink, Imgburn, DVDFab (Paid subscription way better),

Not free:Clone Dvd, AnyDvd (decrypts on the run), great with Clone and Shrink and DVDRebuilder(paid and free).

    Shrink needs decryption first .
