When you rip a dvd to your hard drive and then shrink it to fit it on to a 4.8 gig disc can you tell the difference in quality. Or is it not noticable. I am just wondering because i am using DVD decypter and then DVD shrink and i wanted to know if there was a noticable quality lose between the full movie and the shrunk version

    I use "I copy dvd's2".
It burns movies that look the same as the original on a 4.7gb disk.
I don't beleive there is any compression involved with my software though.
If I'm right there wouldnt be a need to shrink the file size unless you wanna fit two movies on it.Having said that I dont know if dvd shrink will cause a loss in visable quality.

If the main movie files are more than 4.7GB, you can bet the farm that there will be compression. In reality the actual usual size on a currently available single-sided DVD media is ~4.4GB, somewhere around 300MB is used for overhead generated by the burning software.

If a DVD player supports the media type used that there should not be a problem, if any skipping or scrambling occurs that is mainly due to either a bad burn job (drive or the application used) or the media used (cheap or dirty/scratched disc, etc.). If the player freezes at certain points while playing the movie that is mainly due to the decoder of the DVD player not being powerful enough. If the compression is extremely high then blurring or discolorization could happen but that is not very common, try keeping the compression ratio above 50%. Movie I have not noticed a difference between movies I backed up using a compression above 65% and the original movie itself. Hope this helps.

I dont notice any differance, But if you edit, remove all the extras you wont have to use as much compression!
You can manually control compression but I cant tell any differance.

If you want to save some time skip DVD decryptor and use DVD43free, run's silently in the background it does it's thing instantly when opening disk or file with Shrink (only works with W2k or XP) (one les step save lot of time!)
    Here is the link:
    http://www.dvd43.com/
If Burning to Media, I reccomend Nero 6 Ultra works great wth shrink,Decryptor and DVD43free.
The only time I use DVD decryptor is when I get error's using shrink, decryptor has the ability to ignor errors where as shrink does not!

If your too cheap to buy burning software, Decryptor will burn, not the best but works.

All the programs mentioned all work great together neither have any conflict with each other.

I Copy dvd 2 is great program too, One of the simplest, two clicks of the mouse one to copy one to burn, I bought it for $20
It does compress, compression utility is built in the program.
You can edit somewhat to limit compression, copy movie only or complete backup. ( O.K. three mouse click's)

There is an update for it at thier web to make program compatitable for dual layer, no compression involved there, atleast till you exceed about 9g's.
Ofcourse ya need dual layer burner ta utilize the update.
DVd43free posted above, works great with this program too!

what you want to do is sue dvd decrypter and dvd shrink. insert the disc and use shrink to "re autor" it. this way u can select only ceratin things u want to put on your hardrive, saving time and room- so u can take only the main movie- no subtitles or other languages, and bring the total size down considerably. the quality is great- looks perfect.

You are suggesting people should sue the creators of these (imo) 2 of the greatest FREE DVD decrypting/burning software not to mentioned they are offered as is without any claims, instead of advising people to donate and help the project?

    Mmmkay...
