DVD-Rom + DVD Burner or ???

My Dell Dimension 8200 currently has two disc drives - a DVD-Rom (play only) drive and a CD burner in it. I expect to receive my new DVD burner this week. My question is, which drive should I pull out to make way for the DVD Burner?

Would it better to have the DVD-Rom drive (which can also play CDs) and the DVD-Burner, or the CD-Burner and the DVD Burner?

It occurs to me that by leaving in the DVD-Rom drive, I could put a DVD disc in that drive and copy it to the new DVD burner. Would there be any advantage to have -both- a CD-burner and a DVD burner in the same machine?

Are you totally confused now? (grin). With space for just two drives, which two would give the greatest flexibility?

No benefit to leaving the CD Burner in as your new DVD burner will do all the tasks a CD burner would do.

I would leave the DVD rom in as it will allow you to backup DVDs and the data you may store on them.

I agree with Halo. In fact it's exactly what I did last month when I got my DVD burner. :)

I'm surprised you don't have 3 slots! Usually most cases have room for like 4. Anyhow, just be alert that its gonna take longer to burn CD's now since DVD burners haven't reached the point where there fast yet. I believe 8x is the fastest now?

    Huh? The Plextor 712A my friend has is 12X DVD+R, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD+RW, 4X DVD-RW, 16X DVD-ROM, 48X CD-R, 24X CD-RW and 48X CD-ROM.

Plextor's top of the line CD-RW model is 52/32/52.

Remember, the DVD stuff is a multple of base DVD, and CD is a multiple of base CD.
    1X CD is 240 to 540 rpm
    1x DVD is 570 to 1515 rpm

Additionally, 1X CD has a transfer speed of 150 KBps. DVD 1X is 1.4 MBps... about 9 times as fast.

That means that 8X DVD-R (yes, it has 12X DVD+R, but you were referring to 8X) is moving at 4560 to 12,120... with a transfer rate of ~11.2 MBps. A 52X CD-R is moving at 12,480 to 28,080 -- up to twice as fast -- but the transfer rate is only ~7.8 MBps. Still well under the transfer speed of a DVD rotating half as fast.

Remember kids: Just because a number is bigger doesn't mean it's better!

This post has been brought to you be the letters V and R and the number 6.

The new DVD Burner is a Liteon SOHW-1213S with a reported CD burn speed of 48x. What I would be pulling out is a GL (HL-DT-ST) GCE-8400B (CDRW Burner) with a reported CD burn speed of 40x. I don't expect a huge difference, but can't see keeping the CD burner in the machine too (even though I think there is another bay available, I'm not sure there is another set of cables). What would be the point of having three drives in the machine??

    "I'm surprised you don't have 3 slots!"

The number of drive bays usually is not the limiting factor. For me, and probably Halo, it's more like the number of IDE controllers. Most motherboards only have 2 connectors so that's 4 devices. And you don't want to mix CD drives and HDDs because that will slow down the transfer speed of the HDD. So, unless you buy another PCI IDE controller, you can have 2 HDDs and 2 CD-Drives. Some of the new Athlon 64 based mobos have 3 IDE connectors for a total of 6 devices, but unless you have one of those you may only be stuck with a max of 4 IDE devices. :) Hope that clears it up.

I have the NEC ND-2510A DVD +/- RW burner. Right now, you can get them at Newegg for about $80. So far, I've not burned a single coaster. That's out of about 20-30 discs. I highly recommend it. :)

It can also do dual layer burning (8.5Gb DVD+R discs) when the media becomes available.

    Hi Guys,

Not sure that i should be in this thread, but i am off today to buy dvd-r and a dvd-rw and pulling out my (wait for it) cd- r and cdr\rw.

    The question is this
If downloading from internet, what is the best software to use with them and will all downloads and burns play on all house hold DVD players or only in all PC DVD drives

I just read it back and im not sure if that makes any sence.
    regards
    terry

Yes, 2.4x DVD+R DL is dual layer. The discs are not readily available yet, but will probably be in the next few months.

I'm waiting to see how Blu-Ray compares to DL in popularity. I expect there will eventually be DL Blu-Ray... but that's a ways off. For me, I'll have no problem paying $20 less for the NEC 2500A and giving up DL support.

If you are planning on trying to download DVD movies from the internet, don't waste your time. It will take several hours to download a full DVD, even on broadband. I'm basing this on people's experiences downloading Fahrenheit 9/11 (apparently Moore and Lion's Gate Films have decided the message is more important than profit, and have no plans to stop it). Besides, no one here will help break any copyright laws. If I have misinterpreted your request, I apologise for my confusion.

    Hi Mr Playing

I wanted to down load things like Eastenders and english tv or soaps that are availble on line bu not on video or dvds in the shops, which proberly still breaking copyright laws, but i miss a lot of english telly and living this far south the satalite dot pick most of the channels. surly any advice on cdr/rw or dvd rw is helping some one break some kind of copy right laws at some time? if kept longer than 24 hours?

Very nice advertising ploy if you ask me, reverse psycology ;) as you say it can take forever to DL!
