DVD rom not showing up in device manager

    XP Pro Sp2, AMDX2 4400 2 gig ram 74 gig raptor HD.. this started by me reinstalling windows i think. i hvae no floppy drive but when i checked in my computer it showed a floppy went in to bios to disable it it shows my dvd rom in there as seocondary . when i go to device manager it shows my hard drvie in the disk drive list but nothing else .i have power to my dvd and opens and lights up when i hit the button put in a disk it says put in disk and try again. Just not sure why it is borked and how to fix it LOL MB is a Asus A8N-Sli the dvd rom is a LG GSA-4166B 16x supermulti dvd/cd rewriter with lightscribe the system was fine running great and only thing big i have done was reinstall windows just updated them not a full install thxs for ther help

    thxs for the info i tried both ways and did not help
    would my dvd rom be listed as 2nd master in bios with no other drives ?

    Are they on seperate IDE cables? You should have three ...one primary (for the hard drives) one secondary (for cd/dvd/zip drives) and one for a floppy ....(very different that the other two).

    no same cable just do not have a floppy just one hard drive and the dvd rom just did not know it was a secondary is all i am a rookie in the bios i try not t go there but right now my help is limited to just me and the forums right now LOL

    Both the hard drive and the dvd are on the same cable? ...if so, one (hard drive) should be jumpered as master ..and the dvd jumpered as slave.

    they are on same cable just did not know it was 2 nd i installed everest and it shows no dvd rom installed lol i have no clue what to do lol not sure if unhooking cable and hooking it back up would do anything or not make it think new hardware ?going to go in and unhook and look if there are 2 cables or not i think they are both on one . i will post and let ya know for sure thanks again

    Do you have a second cable? If so, pull the dvd off that primary and put it on the secondary ....they (hhd and dvd can then both be set as masters) ....
    If only the one cable, you should have the hhd at the end connection, and the dvd in the middle connection and jumpered as a slave ....should be a diagram on the dvd case showing the jumper settings.:)

    ok here it is hard drive is 1st sata master and dvd rom is 2nd ide master sata wire for HD and ide ribbon cable for the dvd rom
