DVD ROM Problems

I don't have any idea what the problem is here. I have two drives on my computer. Both have been add-ons: a DVD R/RW drive and a DVD ROM drive that can read DVDs but not burn them. I used to be able to burn data DVDs using Nero Express, and my DVD Rom drive could read them without a problem. For some reason, I can't anymore. I can burn the discs full of mpg & avi files fine, and Nero says that the burn was completed successfully. Results vary when I put the disc in my second drive. When I open the disc, everything looks fine, and the files seem to be on the disc, but I have poorer luck when I actually click on a file name. Either I can play some tracks but not all of them, or the discs are wholly faulty. When I try to play some of the mpg data files, it takes forever and eventually tells me that the disc may be damaged or dirty. I've tried playing with Nero's settings but no avail. I've also used a variety of virus and adware software removal programs and removed quite a few viruses, adware, and spybots. Where can I go from here?

I can't tell which drive has the problem. The DVD R/RW drive, by the way, has never been able to play data DVDs (it says something like "I/O redundancy error" when I try), but I hadn't had any problems playing them on the DVD ROM drive before. Please help me!

I'm guessing that the problem has more to with the DVD-R/RW drive or Nero Express. I tried the discs I had burned in another computer, and they didn't play properly.

If you write a data DVD with a DVD R/RW that drive it should read it.
You don't need the surplus DVD ROM drive.
Drives seem faulty, as Nero completes successfully.
Have you updated DVD drive firmware?
I did this b4 and it worked a treat, although I am now experiencing DVD writing problems again myself.

I'm going to sound like a real idiot. Firmware? How do I update it?

Just a thought . . . did you make sure the jumpers on the optical drives are set properly? I mean, one master and one slaved? Depending on what model motherboard you have this can sometime cause very weird problems with optical drives.

Also, since you have added new hardware, it might be a good idea to reset the CMOS info in bios, or take the board battery out for a few mins.

I have never had the exact problem you describe, but the above things have caused me grief in the past when dealing with optical drives. All my pc's have two -one that reads only and one that burns, be it DVD or CD. I like having two drives, as this enables me to "burn on the fly"

    Good luck!

To update firmware...visit manufacturers website, and look for support and updated firmware for your model.
