Would this be DVDs as in movies or just any DVD data disk?

    If Movies then........
Most likely you will need some CODECs to allow DVD playback as XP by default didnt come with any, are you using WMP to playback or another application as if another application as in PowerDVD that one should have the CODECs for MPEG ( DVD ) playback.

or download and install this CODEC pack http://www.majorgeeks.com/XP_Codec_Pack_d4838.html

    If data disks then........
Delete the CD Drive from Device Manager and re-boot as XP will pickup the driver and install it again.
