Dvd - Rom will not recognize any kind of disc

I have a Samsung Dvd-rom SD-612 that was working well on Windows ME. For quite sometime now when I insert any kind of disc a green light flashes, but nothing happens . When i go to my computer to access the d drive it says, "please insert disc into drive d", even though there is already a disc in the drive. Device manager says the device is working properly. Media player opens with the message, "MMSYSTEM 262 problem with media device". Any ideas from anyone of what is going on? Thanks!

 

the device will typically be reported as working properly so long as the device controller responds. However, internal damage to the laser will probably not show as a faulty.

If it won't read ANY dics, then I'd lean towards device failure of the hardware kind.
