DVD Running CD problems.

I recently bought a DVD-Rom, at first it worked fine, run CDs and DVDs. But after I uninstalled SP2 (Because it made my PC run too slow), it only reads DVD-Roms, and fails to read CD-Roms. In device manager it doesn't state it's brand, just says IDE DVD-Rom 16X. I uninstalled it from Device Managed and used add new hardware to install it again; no luck. Device manager also states there are no problems with it.

What it does; I insert the CD, it tries to read it, the busy light on the DVD-Rom lights up, and blinks alot, and continues to do this. If it is a music CD, i opened windows media player, and I try to select it to run CD and it crashes. When I try to play all games it says please insert the CD.

I've read up about this, I don't have more than 4 IDE devices installed, also I'm not trying to read CD-RW or CD-W that I've heard cause problems, just legit CD-Roms.

I can only assume uninstalling SP2 did something, because when I did I had to reinstall Windows Media Player and other programmes that seemed to stop working.

I reinstalled windows (Not formatted just re-install), this did not solve it.

How could I solve this without resorting to format?

Service pack 2 left my laptop with many problems, wouldn't even boot, so I booted in safe mode, uninstalled it and was fine.
As for the dvd rom drive, when you insert a cdrom does the disc appear in my computer, like the cd name and icon, if there is one?
Do you have the make of the dvd rom because then you might be able to install drivers off the manufacturers website.

 

It usually freezes My Computer for ages, then after 3 minutes it might show the CD name, if I right click -> Explore, same, and slowly shows files. But it used to work perfectly. I'll try and find out who the manufacturer is however.

is it set to be master and on the secondary ide cable?

I tried running it in Linux Knoppix (I think, if that's the CD bootable one, though I ran it through my CD-RW drive), and the DVD-Drive with CD-Rom crashes it also.
I'm assuming the CD reading laser on the drive might have already worn out...

 

hmmm can you try taking it out and putting it into a different computer? And how long have you been experiencing this problem, you say you recently bought it, but how soon after did this problem occur? If it does the same things on another computer then it needs replacing and should still be under guarantee.
