DVD/RW Drive Does Not Function (at all)

I'm having a bit of a hard time getting the DVD/RW drive to function on my old DELL Dimension 8400. I opened up and took a look inside and all of the relevant cables appear to be hooked up OK.

The little green light does not blink (like it usually did before when it was working). I researched the problem and tried updating the driver in the Device Manager. Here's the kicker: While I was updating the driver the light blinked the entire time while it was installing, however when I restarted the computer the light was not blinking and the DVD drive door would not open after pressing the button. According to the properties PHILIPS DVD+RW DVD8613 "Device Status: This device is functioning properly" however it does not function. It also says "Location: Location 1 (1)" if that helps.

sounds a bit like a dodgey open putton. Try using a pin through the manual open switch and put a disk in. If it reads the disk then you know the drive is fine. and it is the open button.

Worst case you can replace the drive for £20

Thanks. I just tried your suggestion - still nothing, unfortunately. When I saw that light go on (when updating the driver in the Device Manager) I thought maybe I was just missing something. Oh well... I guess I'll just replace the drive.
