DVD-RW Drive not being found

My friend, who I was trying to help fix his computer yesterday, has a serious problem.

When he turns on the PC, all that shows is his background and he can run programs only from his Task Manager (no start menu, nothing). We went to My Computer to insert a Win XP but there is NO DVD ROM listed. When we put a CD/DVD in, it does not run automatically.

Yesterday, we tried to fix his old DVD rom but could not find it when we opened My Computer. In Device Manager, it was there with a yellow exclamation mark. We updated, uninstalled, disabled, did everything we could with no luck. Then he bought a different one and we spent an hour opening the PC, inserting and closing CD. It "works" but it is not found. We deleted the IDE drivers once and we got the PC to work like it was supposed to, but when we restarted so drivers coule properly install, it was back to old and the same process works no more.

Hi and welcome to MG.. First thing to check is have you got the ribbon connected properly, you will see a red stripe on it and it should be facing outwards from the Rom also it must be connected the correct way around on the motherboard. Next look on top of the ROM itself and you will see Jumper settings there Master/Slave. If you are going to make it 'Master' it must be connected at the End of the Ribbon not the intermediary one as that is for the second Rom to be installed as Slave.
