DVD RW drive problem

Basically I have a plextor dvd/rw drive that will no longer burn ISOs or erase CDRW or DVDRW disks. Nor will it finish burning to CDR, it seem to die when it tries to close the disk. Also it will not boot from ISO's burnt on another PC. Apart from being a pain in the Rs, it will run pretty much any other disk. To make sure it wasn't an XP issue I did a fresh install on another partition, but it was still useless. I also tried these tasks with nero (OEM and a later version), alchohol and plextools. I have another DVD drive which seems also not to be working wonderfully, and has a memory ?leak? issue trying to boot from aforementined ISO, which is why I am hoping it is not an expensive hardware issue.

Do I need a new one? This is only 2 years old but I think it is blown, right?
