DVD RW drive wont burn

Hi I posted a couple of weeks ago but I got no replies yet so I wondered if anyone could help. I have an Aopen DVD RW drive and it wont even recognise blank DVD's I tried both + and - disks but neither are recognised. the drive plays DVD's fine it just wont burn.

I went back and read your original post on this matter! What burning software are you using? Win XP has the native ability to write to CD's but not DVD's. As a long shot without knowing anything about your system, you could go to My Computer and right click on the drive and choose the properties tab. This should bring up a menu and recording should be at the far right. Click on it and see if recording is enabled for the drive. Hope this helps!

 

Hi Sorry I should have provided more details.
MY OS is win2000 pro
the DVD is an Aopen DUW1616/ARR
I installed it myself and I think my pc thinks its just a CD drive. I've tried to update the firmware from Aopen but my pc doesnt recognise the file type that I downloaded. I am going to search for some other firmware updates to see if that will fix the issue.

 

You didn't mention what burning software that you are using! I would be carefull with the firmware updates without exhausting all other possibilities first, as a bad one can render your unit to a paper weight status!

 

sorry again. I have nero and I have dvdfab decrypter and dvd shrink but I just managed to update the firmware from aopen and as you have just said it now looks to be a paperweight. the pc doesnt even see it anymore. grrrr

 

I rebooted and its working again. it still wont recognise blank media though.

 

Has this burner worked properly burning DVD's before? Will it burn a CD? Is this the only burner in your system? Did you check in My Computer to see if burning/recording was enabled for this drive?

 

I have never burnt anything with this drive. I tried looking for enable burn in properties but there is no option to enable burn. I replaced an ole cd rw drive with this dvd drive over a year ago it has worked playing movies etc but just doesnt burn.

 

Possibly my error on the enable recording, as I'm using XP and not sure that 2000 has this option. What version of Nero are you using. It could be that it has become corrupted. You might consider downloading a freeware burning program such as this, http://www.majorgeeks.com/CDBurnerXP_d4242.html, and trying it to see if it will work.

 

I dont think its a nero thing I really think its the dvd drive software. I am half tempted to go and buy a new burner and if that fails take it back untill i get one working. thanks for the help though it been tuff trying to get this thing going and your help has been invaluable.
