I reformatted my hard drive and then installed windows 2000. I put a DVD in and it read the DVD just fine. However, after installing DirectX 9.0 it would no longer read DVD's anymore. I went to the device manager and the drive it is using is a cdrom.ini driver. Anyone know a fix for this or somewhere I can get another driver for it?

Have you installed all the other updates and service packs? And do you get any error messages when you tried to read a DVD?

I have not installed all of the updates, but when I tried this the first time, before I reformatted the hard drive, it worked without the updates.

I do get an error message. I think it is error 17235, unable to detect an APSI or ASPI (not sure which one it said) manager. I go to the device manager and I don't see a APSI or whatever manager??

The drive will read CD's and the Windows 2000 disc, but it won't read DVD's. It did read them before I installed Directx 9.0 because I used the decryptor to burn a movie to my hard drive and it worked just fine...

    Uninstall DirectX. :)

Or get all the other updates, I believe there is a security update or something after you install DirectX, so, that might mean something.

But I need Directx to burn a DVD...

And with dial up at home, it takes about 10 hours to download updates..LOL...

I am thinking that it may be the driver....what is the driver for a DVD-RW on Win 2000? I know the one it is using now is cdrom.ini? Wouldn't it be different for a DVD-RW drive? If someone could email me the driver for their DVD-RW?

I am out of options, that's why I came to MG...

You came to MG for help and you don't like our suggestions.....

I got an idea, where is my magic wand????

Unfortunately, you can't uninstall DirectX without rolling your machine back to an earlier System Restore Point, which I don't think Windows 2000 has. Could you tell us who makes your DVD drive so that we see if there's any issues with it and Win2000?

The DVD-RW came in a new gateway machine that my office purchased...We purchased 14 of them and they all had DVD burners in them and our employees could do whatever they wanted to with them. So I took out my DVD burner and installed it at home, I think its made by NEC? I may be wrong...but it worked with Win 2000 before my reformat adventure...

What if I searched for the driver on the gateway at work and put in on a disk and take it home...Would that work?

have you tried removing it from the device manager and letting Windows Redetect it?

I was about one click away from uninstalling it last night, but I didn't want to screw things up even more by Windows not being able to detect it...

I guess I can try that this afternoon...Also, one thing to point out to you guys, The digital out cable, the little gray cable with the small connector that plugs in to the back of the drive from the motherboard? it isn't connected...is that a problem?

It's just a small round cable right? If so don't sweat it, that's just an audio cable that leads to your sound card or onboard sound port ( whichever you use ).

Yeah, its just a small round cable...I just thought that might be the reason why it wasn't working...Ok now, on to the next idea...I don't have anymore ideas LOL!

what about reloading the aspi layer? would that work in this situation since he is getting an aspi error?

If you could tell me what in the world that is and how to do it...that might work LOL.

I have never had any experience with an aspi and I would know the first thing to do...

I just want to burn some movies....LOL and all this trouble isn't helping me

    Ace,

I am not at that particular computer at this time. What would I need to do with this file when I get it on the computer? Just unzip it and it does everything else? I am not computer illiterate, just have never come across this problem before!

its an .exe, so you download the file to your desktop or a location you'll remember, then double-click the .exe, and follow the prompts.

I tried the ASPI thing and it still didn't work. I also downloaded a driver off the web for that particular DVD-RW drive and windows said my current driver is best. Should I install a CD Rom in it and see it that makes a difference?

Currently all I have is the DVD drive. I put in Along Came Polly and it read it fine, but wouldn't play it. It won't even read a blank DVD. Any more suggestions?

I have gone through the troubleshoot section.

It is a NEC ND-1300A that comes with a new gateway. I installed it at home in my Compaq...It worked fine before the reformat, I guess I wiped out a very important file...

One question...Do I have to have a DVD Decoder to make a DVD-RW work? What is a DVD Decoder anyway?

You do need a dvd decoder for dvd playback. It's not necessary for reading and writing of files though. A DVD Decoder basically reads the files that are on the DVD and translates them into a format your computer can display.

So a DVD Decoder is not necessary for reading a blank DVD and burning stuff to it?
