DVD+RW plays DVDs but not CDs

Got an HP laptop with a DVD/CD combo drive. Recently the player will only recognize DVDs and won't even see a CD (music or data) that's insterted. Everything seems legit driver-wise and in the hardware settings. I've tried deleting from Device Manager and reinstalling with no effect.

 

Suspect that the drive you have has two separate lasers - one for DVDs and one for CDs. Using a CD cleaner would be the first thing to try before rushing out to buy a new drive.

I have a smilier problem with my DVD burner.
It will play DVD's fine but is extremily fussy when using normal cd's
It will only genrally read a normal cd if it has been burned using itself
saying that though mines is over 2 years old...
