DVD RW problem

    I have a Dell Dimension 1100 running with XP. The DVD Rom is a Philips 8801 model which does not read/record any discs. I tried to replace the driver, cleaned the lens with a cleaner disc. Nothing seems to work.
    There is also a second DVD Rom which is an LG and it works fine.
    Any help to get the Philips working would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi, Lakshman. Welcome to Major Geeks. :)

    With a machine that old, it's possible the Philips may have simply gone kaput. Ebay may have a replacement at a reasonable price. You may then only need to update the firmware which you can get from Dell if you go to the support site, enter your Service Tag number and go to drivers and downloads.

    I had to do similar with my Dell's optical drive because it fell to the floor and broke. :-o

    I have 2 drives in an old custom built PC. One stopped working a few years ago. I just let it in the tower and use the other drive for everything. I didn't feel like tearing it apart and putting in another drive.

    The Service Manual, also available as a PDF download from Dell, would greatly simplify the process.
