after replacing my motherboard my dvd-rw drive isnt working. it opens and all that but it cant detect disks. i tried updating the driver but it says its incompatible with my hardware even though i downloaded the exact one for my drive. any ideas?

OK so it has power. Check to see that both ends of the IDE cable are seated correctly & the right way around.

I think they may have gotten switched (my dvd-rom drive and dvd-rw drive) around. Could this have messed it up? maybe they are set differently in the BIOS? or would this even cause this problem

The bios should automatically pick the change up.

If it is seated OK try removing the IDE cable, turn it over & try again. That's if you are not sure of how it was initially.
