    present config...
    microsoft windows xp
    media center edition
    version 2002
    service pack 3

    gateway mx6445
    amd turion 64 mobile

    i have a dvd/cd-rom (Standard CD-ROM drives) hl-dt-st dvd-rw gwa-4082n.

drive will read all cd's and write to all cd's with no problem.
drive will read all dvd's WITH information. however, it will not acknowledge blank dvd's.

in the past, i have written to dvd's with information, movies, files, etc. however, just recently it stopped reading blank dvd's.

i tried looking for updated drivers but, couldn't find anything. any ideas?????????

    thanks,
    jack

i've read up on encrypted information without much luck except for one program...

    subinacl.exe

the notes on this program sound promising however, i have absolutely no idea how to run it. i have read the instructions from the microsoft website and tried a couple of lines but, nothing happened. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

any help or ideas would greatly be appreciated...
    thanks

    Hi J,

Are you sure that's a DVD writer? Some are just CD Writers and read both. A non-DVD writer would have that error message on a blank DVD.

    Good Luck, Jim

    positive.

    the drive itself says:

    compact disc rewritable high speed.
    dvd rom/r/rw

in the past, i have written to dvd's. same brand, same format. in fact, same dvd package that i bought.

something strange is happening when i open the dialog box from "my computer". when there is nothing in the drive, it says "dvd rw drive (E:)". as soon as i put a blank dvd formated disk, it changes and says "cd drive (E:)". i don't recall it doing this in the past.

    thanks for answering so fast.
    regards,
    jack

please disregard the last post about encrypted files. it was meant for another thread but, i haven't had much sleep lately and i must have fallen asleep when i posted it.

All of my DVD burners change to "cd drive" when a blank DVD is inserted in them also.

Nothing is wrong with the drives. It's a Windoze thing.

Have you tried burning to the drive with a blank DVD in it?

i have tried to burn with a dvd in the drive. it says, "windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. what do you want windows to do?"

i read a post from another user that said to disable the imapi cd-burning com service. i did that and i was able to move files to the E: drive but, when i clicked to burn, this is what it says to insert writable disk.
