I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to this. It can take quite a few hours to burn DVDs because if the video files are not already in DVD format, the burning software has to encode them, which is what takes the time.
There are loads of different software packages out there, and people have their favourites. If it works and they like the results, it's good.
I use Adobe Premiere Elements 2 for making DVDs. I use it occasionally anyway for editing, otherwise I probably would have been using something else.

    VideoHelp.Com has some useful info . . . .

A DVD will have two folders. VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. The audio one is usually empty, and the video one will have VOB files, BUP files and other things I can't think of just now. When I want to make a DVD that will play on a standalone DVD player, I use Premiere Elements, but instead of telling it to burn straight to the disc, I choose a folder on the computer. Then I can use whatever CD / DVD burning software (Sonic RecordNow DX) to actually put the files on the DVD. The DVD will then play on standalone players.
I did try some Nero software but didn't have much success with it. I know lots of people do use and get good results, so I'm sure it must work.

You could buy Premiere Elements 3 (which is the current version, and it's about £80 in the shops here, maybe cheaper in other countries) and this will give you the option of converting video to the correct format, which you can 'burn' to a folder on a computer if you want to, for later burning to DVDs. There is a free trial, or if you're into eBay, you can often get the software there. Version 2 is on at the moment, and it's nice and cheap as well. When it was the current version, it was 3 times the price so that's one option. The one I'm thinking of is $49 plus postage - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=160067706387&rd=1&rd=1
If I didn't already have it, I'd buy that, it's still there and it's been on there a few days so there's a bargain for someone.
