Have a Sony DVD burner. rated to run up to 20X, while doing backup of a DVD I own, the burner suddenly switched to 2X. How do i get it back up to full speed? Tried to use the Drive Speed utility in Nero, but it had no effect.

From what I understand about DVD burners is that the speed of the burning process does not rely on the speed of the drive, but rather the speed of the media you're using. Your drive has a max speed of 20X, but if your using a disc with a speed of, say, 16X, your burner will operate at 16X. Check the disc you're using that gives 2X. The speed should be imprinted on the inner circle. Hope this helps!!;)

Yes how right you are Stubby its a common misconception .. are you using a DVD Rewriter Disc mountinrich as that could be the reason although they mostly burn at 4X.

The media has not changed (Sony DVD-R, rated at 16X) However, in the IDE channel, this drive seems to be stuck on the PIO mode setting, even though i have set it to allow DMA. Is there a way to unstick it? would it help to uninstall the drivers and reinstall? a simple reboot did not change anything.

Found the issue. In WinXP, if the drive has 6 errors while it is running disks, it switches to PIO mode, and locks the DVD drive there. To correct, you have to uninstall the DVD in the Hardware profiles, then restart and let XP reload the drivers. Then you can go back to IDE ATA controlers, and allow DMA mode again. So far, it has solved the problem.
