Hi,this is no biggy but I would like to know the answer to my question if anyone can help. A friend of mind just came back from Europe and she was at a friends wedding. They gave her a DVD with the wedding pictures burned onto it,me thinks its pictures. Well when I try to play it on my computer which has a DVD Player ( Windows XP Pro ) it will not run or play. I mean the CD will not even spin,I've tried other DVD's of my own and they work just fine. Does anyone know what it up with this,is there something different because it came from Europe. There is now difference in the CD's looks.
    Marlene,

Region coding is your problem--This one is due to antipiracy codecs --different country different codes--SOME dvd players allow you to change region codes a set # of times --Look for this change (country or region) on your menu etc--
MAKE sure you have enough codes to change it back to your country of origin as you usa dvds will not play whilst switched.

    Hope that did not confuse-

Region coding doesn't apply to "home made" DVD's, only commercial ones, so that can't be it.

Have you tried the DVD on other machines, and if so, does it play?

It could very well be the DVD or the way it was burnt.

    Hugsssss.

Then either the disc itself is no good, or whoever burnt it didn't do it properly.

Not much you can do really if that's the case.

Have you tried to browse the DVD with Windows Explorer, and if so, can you see any contents?

    Hugsssss.

    Something else to look into....

If the CD has a label, flip it. Kinda move the cd in different lighting. Do you see a faint dark area that is different from the other areas?

I'm not sure if I'm describing this properly. Anyway, if you see no discoloarization (a word?), then that cd(dvd) is blank.

I can not see the can contents because the CD will not spin it just sits there and does nothing so you can not browse it. And yes you can see the darken area on the CD,there is something burnt on it. That's the thing that really got me,the CD will not spin like others do when you put them in to play. This CD looks like a standard CD,size, thickness,,,,yada yada yada....

I had that problem a couple of times before!!!!

The DVD making industry is very crooked!!!! There are several brands that are the same but different!!

I'm trying not to confuse you here!! I fought this issue for 2-3 weeks when I bought my first dvd burner, but anyway...Let's say you buy a pack of Sony DVD from Kmart (not that anybody shops there!!) and they don't work...you buy a pack of the SAME LOOKING dvds from, say...Target, and they work just fine!! That is because those dvds are, neither one, made by Sony themselves, AND...they were both made by two seperate companies at that!!!! Another words...Even the Name brand companies outsource the production of their dvd mediums, so therefore you have to find one and stick with it!!

After going through 4 different brands, and 2-3 weeks before I was productive...I ALWAYS get my dvds from Walgreens...Maxell DVD-R...and haven't had one bit of trouble since!!!!

Below is a posted link that will explain in better detail (very informative and easy to understand)!! That is if you are truly interested in what caused the problem, and how to avoid it in the future!! Otherwise...just frisbee it back to your friend and tell them to get better media!!!! LOL

    Good luck!!!!

Do you have a standalone DVD player ( type hooked upto TV ) if so try it in that, it maybe movie.... still doesnt explain why it wouldnt spin at least.

Think what theefool is hinting at is if you see the darker side which looks as if its got data written to it, which way up are you putting it in the drive, darker data side facing down? ( happens in my work we use silver cds which have no label side.. common for the cds to go in upside down )

LOL...that could definately do it!!!! But I forget about the fact that there are some dvds/cds that look exactly alike on both sides if there is no label!!!!

    No hugssss for them!

Don't take it personally, that's how forums are.

It's impossible to accurately gauge someone's knowledge.

Are you sure it's not a tape or a vinyl record? They won't play in a DVD player. j/k :p

What it could also be is a DVD RAM disc.

Some video recorders that record directly to DVD, like Panasonic and Hitachi, (as opposed to digital tape) use DVD RAM, so you need a compatible player.

I think it's time for a group hug.

    Hugsssssss.
