I swapped out my Sony CD/DVD writer to a Philips (HP300c) writer that was in an old Compaq PC because the Sony died on me.
The Device manager says that everything is OK, however, I get video but no audio...?
    The drivers check out ok

Please post system specs including motherboard and OS.

Do you have any sound at all?

Do you have access to volume/sound manager?

If the answer to the top question is "No" then: ...

First goto device manager and uninstall the sound drivers.

Restart and see if it finds them, if they work, great.

If not, Reinstall them from your disc or from online.

If that doesn't work an idea, long shot but an idea is to go into your BIOS on boot up and look for "Plug and Play" options.
Make sure it is set to "Yes"
"WARNING" The BIOS is very important, do NOT alter things in the BIOS without knowing what you are changing.

If you have no luck with the driver install and want to try the BIOS thing but are unsure how to do it please ask for detailed explination. :)

I had similar problems after installing a new Sony DVD drive and the BIOS fix was how I got it working, but try the driver reinstall first.

Sorry it took soo long to reply, got tied up with business and all. My OS is Windows XP Professional the device mgr. showed the drivers were already installed for that piece of hardware and there were no problems. I opened up the tower again because I was also getting an EAX console error and saw the ribbon cable was not seated properly for my Audigy sound system so I tried it out again - nothing. Originally HPs software that was part of the OS in the old Compaq I pulled the CD/DVD writer from, 'RecordNow' was missing so I thought that might have something to do with the problem. Since I built the computer myself and it wasn't a Dell or HP it wouldn't allow me to do the free download of the software that I needed.
I took the CD/DVD writer out and voila! - Sound again! I'm still baffled how this would effect the audio...? Guess I'll just go buy a new one.
    Thx for the shout
