Hello all, my first post :)

OK here goes. I'm running XP Pro SP2 and have recently re-installed windows, and my problem being:

Every time I stick in a blank DVD it is showing under properties as full, 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free :cry

I've only been trying to drag files to the empty DVD window but to no avail.

This may sound like a stupid question but, the drive only needs the pata cable and power supply to function????

The drive n question is 'LG GSA-H42N Super Multi DVD-Writer'

    Any help much appreciated

    Best regards

    THESULK

PS. I have tried installing winaspi.dll from info I found on other forums but get this error message ' "winaspi.dll" is not an executable file and no registration helper is registered for this file type'

yes it only needs the pata cable and the power cable.
i would suggest o buy a diferent brand as i have seen some blanc dvd are corrupt and unsuable. so if you insert a dvd-rw you get the same eror? if you can write at a dvd-rw then the problem will be at the disc.

    Hi and welcome to MG's,

Have you tried to run ccleaner yet, believe this to be a problem with a corrupt or missing registery file, download/install and click the registry button (DO NOT change any of the settings )scan for issues then fix, when prompted *save* the files before deleting as this will help in reversing any errors that occur after..(not that there will be as this is one of the safest registry tools available, if it is just loaded with its default settings!!) ..
you can download it from here...

also to check if you actualy have the *winaspi.dll* installed go here...
    C:\ Windows\ system\ winsapi.dll

It is also not a very good idea downloading .dll files from .dll sites you are best getting them from the route source i.e.. your windows install disc.

yep run cc (used b4 through tweakxp forums, dedicated guys, not to say u guys aint ;)) still no joy. I run regseeker too, hopefully thats a legit tool!

Advice about downloaded dll's ty for, but also u stated 'system' not 'system32' so maybe I put the file in the wrong directory?

System updates are still ongoing, would this matter...tried XP sp3 downloads but non work so am awaiting auto update through Windows, would this matter also? failing anymore advice I gotta try new DVD-R discs, seems silly they fail on me just like that but hey, I'm not the pro lol.

thanks for the advice from the both of you

oh just to add to the cunfusion, maybe plain sailing for u guys, but the computer sees CD-R's as empty, and allows me to burn it seems....

There are two different lasers one for DVD and one for CD so it is common for one to go bad and the other to work fine.

Since this just appeared after reinstall that would seem an awful coincidence. Have you tried a thirdparty burning program like CDBurnerXP to see if it sees the DVD as empty? I'd give it a look just to see how it sees the discs. (It seems to me that if XP wasn't recognizing the discs at all it wouldn't give 0 bytes and 0 bytes free. It would just say insert disc)

Thanks sach2, I was going to suggest going with another burner to see if the issue persists.

I'll the other burner as suggested. I did add a new dvd drive b4 re-install, but for whatever reason I never hooked it up so I can try that also and see if the laser in the other is bad.....

again thanx for the help guys

    Hi

What CD/DVD writing software do you have installed as to just drag and drop you need Packet Writing Software as in InCD from Nero or similar, this allows you to use a disk as you would a floppy disk.

In many cases its easier to use the likes of CDBurnerXP to build the data you need in a list and burn.

But also a you have installed a new drive and may have been installing and uninstalling applications that could use the burners, then the upper and lower filters can become corrupt and to fix this try this HERE. you may need to re-install your burning software if they dont see the drive/s.
