dvd writer

    Recently I installed a dvd burner in my wife's computer.
    First of all the icon that shows is a music icon which seems wrong.
    Second, if she leaves the dvd in the tray she can keep working on it but once she takes it out she can't add anything more.
    Is this normal or is there a way to fix it.
    I know that you can continue when working with a cd burner so why not with a dvd
