DVD writer

I'm too close to the problem so I need outside help.
I have a HP DVD writer 640c internal dvd+- rw. I cannot burn disk cd or dvd. I can play dvd's, cd's even games but when i put in a dvd r + or -, cd -r +or - it gives me the option to open folder for either music video or use explorer to save files to the disk however when you try to burn it says it has encountered a problem and cannot record. in addition if you put the disk in and right click on properties it registers no disk usage or free space. I have tried 3 kinds of disk and get the same message.
I uninstalled and re installed the drivers still nothing.
Any Ideas, The solution's got to be right in front of me, I'm just over looking it. :confused

I'm using a HP 530J
xp pro sp3
2 gb ram
200 gig hd

 

Is the "Enable CD recording on this drive" box checked in the device properties ?

I noticed on one of my computers that windows couldn't burn a disc. This particular computer had 3rd party burning software on it (sonic record now dx), which I think must have disabled the normal method.

 

It sounds like the drivers are okay since you have video and audio. HP optical devices require you to have their software installed to burn CD/DVDs. You might want to go to their website and search for the software 'RecordNow' for your 640c and download it. You need that for burning. However, the install disk for the driver for Cd/DVD rom is a Windows app., totally different from the software app. used for burning.
