ok. so. i have a yoga dvd that i want to copy for my daughter. i do not have a dvd rewrite. we thought we could download it to the puter, copy the file to CD, and then when she returned to england she could then copy it to her puter and then to a dvd, (coz she does have dvd rewrite).....but NO. the CD doesnt hold the 3.44GB that is on the DVD. so...we thought we could send the file to her email and then she could copy it , but no...email wont accept it. so...we thought we could 'zip' it and send it. but...no!
i was under the impression that zip files somehow compressed it and made it easier to send, but the zip file is the same size as the 'ordinary' one. can anyone please tell me how to do this?? (i'm not sure about the legalities of copying the dvd, but it is an isolated incident with a DVD no longer in production.)
    love n stuff

Compression will only work to a certain extent and will depend on the file type, as an example if you try to compress a " .exe " file (program installation file) you will get 1-2% at best because it is already compressed. You start an .exe file and it installs a program onto your system which is a lot larger than the intial .exe file ever was. This is probably what you are experiencing but you could try 7-zip (free and achieves some of the highest compression ratios: just do a google) as to how you would do it.

You could right click on the DVD and copy to a folder on desktop (making sure you have that much free HDD space) and then right click on the folder and you will have a 7-zip option > Add To Archive and select Compression method as Ultra (leave all other settings as is) and select okay.

As you can see I achieved compression from 12.1Mb to 7.5Mb but it really depends on the FILE TYPES!!!!

Antoher consideration is there are free large file transfer sites were you upload the file and your can Daughter download it. Once again google this.

I did and found "large file transfer free", many hits, one of the better ones is:

    http://www.yousendit.com/

Don't mention anything about illegall activities and it doesn't matter that it is old, that was unnessary but I will help as you seem very sincere.

'you send it' only sends files up to 1 GB and this one is 3.5 even if is use the 7-zip thing i wont be able to get it small enough toi send. isnt there a way of sending it directly to her puter? or via messenger or something. if i could edit it i could probably cut it in half, as a large chunck is credits and instuctions that dont need repeating, but i dont know how to do that either. for those not familier with my 'specs' i have an e-machine C2825, windows xp with all the updates, and i use yahoo mail. i have both IE and Mozilla. much aloha.

ps. thankyou, and yes i am sincere. :)

There is this free program called Hj-Slip allows you to split your file into different sections. It joins them back together again also.

    This is the site: http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/

    laurieB MajorGeek

i think i need more idiot proof instuction ! :) downloaded hjsplit, but dont know what it does, how to do it, or how it resolves the problem. this may sound dense but, the original file that was downloaded from the dvd is already split into ten files (this is not what you mean is it :( ). the puter did this by its self. we then 'zipped' it and the zip version appears in one file.

What were the files? .vob, .ifo, .bup?

  8. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

    vob :)

    not only but also

i just swept through my puter and updated spy and virus stuff, and cleaned it with ccleaner and clean up, and clean up flashed a little sign saying 'WOW. you really needed that!", and its never done that before.

  9. Just Playin

    Just Playin MajorGeek

    Which ones exactly?

  10. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

i remember S.P.D. and theefool putting files on my puter by 'magic'. is there a special kind of fairy-dust for that?

Mail the first four together and the last four separately through yousendit.com (I'm referring to the picture). Does your daughter have a program capable of burning a DVD?

  13. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

yes she has a nearly new lap top.

so let me make sure i understand....e-mail the first SIX? through yahoo, and send seperately the last four through yousend it.

she will then have five attatchments. what should she then do with them to put them back together? why does she need the first six anyway if the actual video is only on four?

anyway i'll try that and get back to you. kiss kiss hug hug

  14. Just Playin

    Just Playin MajorGeek

    Yes, the six small ones.

The other files without video have the data for menus, chapters, subtitles and audio channels. If she puts them into a folder named VIDEO_TS , she can play it on her computer like a DVD.

I asked about a DVD burning program because in order for her to make a DVD that plays on a standalone DVD player like the movies you rent, she will need a program capable of burning in DVD-Video format.

XP does not have any built in DVD buring solutions (Vista will (DRM)).

I'd suggest Nero, for the DVD in question.

BTW. Emailing these files, even with broadband (remember download is faster than uploading), will take a VERY VERY long time.

I believe that SD and I used file transfer through an IM client. If memory serves me well.

Also, are we talking about sending a copyright yoga dvd to someone? Or am I misreading something?

  16. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

that was gonna be my next question, whether it will take to long? zoe is out at the moment, and i dont know if she has broadband. although i have dsl, its not as fast as it was when i first got it.

i have nero, does that mean i can burn a DVD? ( :( i bet it doesn't. lol)

are all computer CD's the same size? do thay make one that can hold 3.5GB? if so than wouldnt it be simpler to do that and she can either turn that into a dvd when she gets home, or just use the puter as a player.

and what about the file transfer thing? would that work? we both have yahoo. (this is in fact why we both have yahoo. :). we im, pm, voice mail, send pics, and now we can even see and hear each other...the marvels of modern technology. (we still manage to spend loads of time on the phone tho. lol)

    much aloha

    laurieB MajorGeek

i suppose i have to answer that question :)

i dont really know. the dvd is no longer available, and copying it for zoe is the same as making a spare copy for myself. it was given to me by a good friend who bought it in a garage sale for her self, but gave it to me after i quit smoking and was trying to find an excersize programme that suited my rather laid back nature. it is a mix of cardio, relaxation, breathing techniques, stretches and poses, and affirmation chants!! it has it all, lol. i am now trying to find an hour a day for this (fit by fifty...may 14) and since she has been here she has joined me to encourage me, and has got into it herself... all of which is probably more than you wanted to know :)

My major convern here is copyright issues. Is it legal for you to send this DVD to another. If so, then I can help.

On the DVD side. 3.5 gigs (I think) is the norm. Though, there are dual layer, double sided dvds out there.

If you have Nero, ultimate edition, you should be fine, unless the DVD is copyprotected.......

  19. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

its not double sided. i dont know about copyprotected. it must be ok to copy dvd's for personal use though, or what would be the point of having dvd burners? i have nero 6 ultra edition. (6.0.0.11 but i could update to 6.6.06 if that helps)

no, i think i am the only person this end of the island with a puter. lol. and mine is 'old' . (I dont think its old...not quite two years...my friends from england do!!)

Do you have a CD burner? You should have the option to make a Video CD or a SuperVideo CD which can be played on a standalone DVD player with Nero. You can then mail those to your daughter.

Either install a DVD burner for yourself, make the copy with DVDShrink and mail it…

Purchase an external hdd, copy the movie files to it and ship the drive to the location of the other computer (who must have the hardware and software to burn a DVD…)

Split the file into many small segments and email them or upload them to a mutually accessible site… your target must have the hardware and software to burn a DVD…

Nero will do nothing for you or your target if all you have is a CD writer.

  24. Just Playin

    Just Playin MajorGeek

Nero 6 and 7 both can produce video CDs.

1&2) if i could afford these things i wouldnt be asking how to do this with the equipment i have !

    3) i do not know how to do this.

    4) the thread is admittedly getting a little long, but as previously stated i dont have dvd rewite, she does.

thankyou sweetheart, but zoe (bless her) spent most of yesterday searching on the net for it and eventually found a copy on some internet video store. so she bought it. having done so, a friend of ours has told her that US dvd's dont play on english dvd players.....tell me thats not true.

    NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

jesus wept. ok. so is it all dvd's or just some? how do you tell? should she cancell it (if she can which i doubt)? it doesn't apply to music CD's? (iv'e taken to and played cd's in england, and vise-versa).

    how absolutely bloody ridiculous!!

As far as I know, it is only DVDs.

Did she order from an EU site? Or from an american site?

dont know, but would put money on it being american. :(

  33. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

yes it is american. we were able to call them, (on the actual phone no less lol) and they have put a note on the order promising a refund if it doesn't work. they couldnt tell us if it was regional only. on the copy i have it says nothing (that i can find) about regions. as this is not a 'proper' film, (ie. one made by hollywood) perhaps it will be ok.

Look my friend had the problem were he couldn't play and English DVD in Australia because of the "Region Coding" which is the appropiate term, 5 minutes on the net a ten digit code into his DVD player and regional coding was disabled. He can now play any DVD from any country. So essentially your daughter didn't have to cancel or send it back but go to this website:

    http://www.videohelp.com/

Search for disabling Regional Coding, no expert but I'm sure you can do it on absoulutely any DVD player. If she wants to watch it on her DVD player on her computer even easier, AnyDVD, DVDcyrpter, etc, etc. There are no boundries to these things and the right "keywords" into google will provide all the answers.

P.s. you may consider posting the original to your daughter, allow her to copy then post back.

    laurieB MajorGeek

now why didnt i think of that!! she could have just taken this one back with her, copied it and posted it back! still its bought and paid for now, so we will let the order stand. thank you so much for the link. i will let you all know if it works when she returns home. much aloha

LaurieB just went to the site and did it to my DVD Player and it is now Region Code FREE!!!!. I have a Japanese girlfriend, have a lady from Tawain living with us and I am native Australian and living here. If I followed "the fools" advice (no offence intended) we would have to have a DVD player imported from both Japan and Tawain (essentially 3 DVD Players) to watch DVDs' from our respective home countries. This is ridiculous but the greedy Corporations want us to believe this so they can create monopolies and milk consumers for every cent. It would be like having a car that could only run on ones country fuel type (petrol) so all consumers could only drive cars manufactered for that country.

I went to this site, put in the model no. for my DVD player, followed the advice (entered a 6 digit no.) and now my player will play DVDs' from any country irrespective of regional coding. I believe all DVD players have this option and I reccomend you try it.
