DVDR will read CDS but not DVDs

Lately, my DVD player will not read (or even recognise) a DVD. CDs play fine, but I am told "insert disc when I have a DVD in the drive. Properties read:
HL-DT-ST DVDRom GDR8162B Driver: C:\\windows...cdrom.sys IDE\CEROM HL-DT-ST_______DVD-ROM__GDR8162B_____________0015____15&264/F507&0&0.0.0

Forgot to add that my puter is a Dell Inspiron, OS is WXP
Have tried uninstalling hardware, and then plug and play reinstalled when recogised, have uninstalled/reinstalled driver....don't know what else to do.

Hi

At times some software that use the Class Upper Filters can cause this, usual suspects are Burning applications, so best to try this as you haev already tried the Hardware driver route, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 and delete the upper and lower filters.

Note: you may or may not need to re-install your burning app again.

Thanks, but it still won't work. Still not recognizing DVDs

It is possible that the DVD laser is dead. A combo drive uses two different lasers, one for CDs and a different one for DVDs so it is possible for 1/2 of the drive to be non-operational.

If you have a friend with an external DVD drive, see if you can borrow it. If a DVD is recognized in the external, then it is more likely to be the internal DVD hardware that is bad, rather than a software problem.

I have another DVD/CD RW in my computer. It will read any disc in that.
