Two recent titles: The Grudge and The Forgotten, will not play in my Matshita UJDA750. Using both Asus DVDXP and Nero showtime I get a message saying there is no disc in the drive. The Grudge has DVDROM content and this auto plays when I insert the DVD just fine. Stacks of other DVDs both commercial and home made play just fine.

I am using an ASUS laptop WinXP SP2. I have tried updating the drivers and firmware, I have rebooted with all background programs shut down to see if there is a conflict there. I am getting nowhere. Any suggestions?

Many new DVDs are using a new form of protection. I believe that both titles you mentioned use this new form of protection. This may cause problems for some players.

That's fummy. The DVDROM interface for The Grudge has a play button. The drop down box says to click that button to play in computers software DVD player.

Is there a workaround for this?

Have you tried updating the player software?

I have read about that. The DVDROM interface provides a link to play the movie on your software player. I don't see why they would add this if they didn't want it to play in a DVDROM drive.
