I currently have a cd writer installed in my computer. I just purchased a SONY DRU 710-A DVD writer. Assuming my hard drive is the master on the primary bus, and the cd writer is the master on the secondary bus, what is the best place to install the DVD writer? Should I switch the CD writer to the slave on the secondary and put the DVD writer as the master on the secondary? Is it okay for them both to be on the secondary? Is it better for the DVD writer to be the master and the cd writer to be the slave. Or should I switch the cd writer to the slave on the primary? Or should I just replace the cd writer with the dvd writer (remove the cd writer entirely)? What will be the least troublesome in terms of computer operation, burning dvd's etc. Thanks.

Well you really need not assume.. most of the time the bios will tell you what device is detected and where.. as far as what combo to connect them in.. I have no preference (& I have many CDR & DVDRs in several units & never put that much thought into it) .. so if someone else want to step up...

well i ahve a cd-r and dvd-r i put dvd-r as master but i wish i put cd because its gota faster reading speed and such and id ont use the dvd as much so think about your usage then dont forget to put the jumpers on 1 for master which there usually set by default and 2 for slave

I would say that it should be a matter of which device that you are going to use most often, as primary devices tend to have DMA enabled, while secondary ones don't. If you are going to backup/burn a lot of DVD's then I would make the DVD burner master. :)

Generally it wouldn't matter too much but for to get better performance out of the drive and the processes involving the drive (reading/writing), it would make sense to leave it on its own IDE channel if possible.
As others stated, it would greately depend on how you aim to use the system.
HardDisk as the Primary Master (pretty much a standard)

DVD writer as the Secondary drive if you will be using it more if not leave the CD writer as the Secondary Master. Now to figure out wherever the 3rd drive would go:
Connect the 3rd drive as a Slave to wherever it would be used less with, meaning if you are burning lots of stuff from HardDisk to CD Burner then it would make more sense to connect the HD and the CD-RW to separate IDE ports and then slave the DVD-RW drive as a Slave to CD-RW drive. If you were to do on-the-fly copying of CDs from DVD (as the reader) to CD-RW (as the writer) then connect the DVD as Slave to the HD on the IDE1 port....etc. ;)

More importantly whichever drive you will be needing to transfer audio from, make sure the audio cable coming from the Sound Card (or the mobo if the sound card is integrated) is connected to that drive.
