Hi, Been going nuts installing various codec things that don't seem to be working! WMP11 wont recognise the films I have downloaded (some of them yes and others no). Also, when I tried to play the dvd on my tv-dvd player it said 'unknown disc'.
Is there anything thats free that I can use to try fix this?
Please help, going mental and almost ready to throw this damn thing out the window and take up reading again! :cry:cry:cry

What OS have you? Vista or XP Home or something else? Codec packs and video players is a jungle but a few are very good. MajorGeeks provide download links to the very best so if you just tell us what system this is supposed to be running on we might be able to help...

We generally do not assist with the bootlegging and pirating of illegally downloaded films. So, unless these are films that you have legal ownership of (and if you downloaded them, that basically tells me that you don't own the originals), you won't find any help here.
    :( Sorry.

Are you meant to do something to the discs once you have burned them so that they play on a dvd player?

The first thing to try could be this codec pack. I think it would be a good idea to uninstall the codecs you already have downloaded in order to avoid a conflict but I'm not sure: http://majorgeeks.com/XP_Codec_Pack_d4838.html

An other thing you could try: Go back to the homepages where you downloaded the movies. And note what format or files the movies are saved in. It should be noted in the CD/DVD file information also. There is a ton of different formats such as flv, wmv, avi and a lot more. When you know each format, you need to go googling for a free player that can play the different file types. I have five or more different players in this PC. Windows Media Player, FlashPlayer, QuickTime, RealPlayer - well, I don't even remember the rest. We all have several of all these players...

No. You would convert them to a DVD compliant format first, before burning. If you just burn it, it won't play on a home DVD player unless the DVD player has DivX playback abilities.

All of the above media players are available here at Major Geeks and will work fine for watching media files on your PC. Here's the Major Geeks links:
    VLC http://www.majorgeeks.com/VLC_media_player_d4674.html
Media Player Classic http://www.majorgeeks.com/Media_Player_Classic_for_Windows_2000XP_d5782.html MPC requires a codec pack to be installed in order to play DVDs and other formats; I like the KLite Mega Pack, and the Storm Pack:
    KLite Mega Codec Pack http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack_d5230.html
    Storm Codec Pack http://www.majorgeeks.com/Storm_Codec_d5491.html
Both codec packs actually have Media Player Classic built-in as an option during installation, so you don't really need to download it separately unless you already have a good codec pack. VLC Media Player pretty much has all its own codecs built-in, so 'external' codecs aren't really required, but they may help....
This should be enough info to allow you to enjoy your legal media files on your PC. That's as far as I'll go.... :-D Enjoy!
