Most all recent cards handle compressed textures with any available drivers. If your card is old enough that is doesn't support them, I think you need a newer video card. IIRC, the card itself has to be designed to use them, not just the drivers. It's been some years since that was an issue.

What video card are you using?

Right click anywhere on the open desktop, choose Properties, click the Settings tab, then the Advanced button, the the Adapter tab. Your card should be named at the top ot that window.

As far as I can remember, the TNT2 cards did not support DXT compression; new drivers won't cure that.

Some games allow you to choose whether or not to use compressed textures, others just assume that your card will, since it's been broadly supported for several years, which is probably where your errors are coming from. If you check the "minimum requirements" for a game, you can usually get an idea if you can play it, but that's one requirement you usually don't see. (shrug)

Defining a "good" card and price is very subjective. Your TNT2 is probably something like 4 years old, and they've come a long way since then. The best of the best video cards generally go for $300 or better, and a "mid-range" gaming card can be half that, or a bit less. Depending on what your system is, CPU speed particularly, the newest cards won't see their best performance as games will be limited by your CPU.

Post your system specs and we'll have a better idea as to what would match up with it, but if your system's abour 4 years old, something at or under $100 dollars would probably be a good match for it.

Athlon 2400? That should run at 2 Ghz.

    Athlon 1.20 Ghz?

Athlon 2400 should mate up nicely to almost anything except the very newest/fastest/most expensive.

Athlon 1.2 Ghz would match up nicely with something like an ATI 9200 series card.

Do you have an AGP slot on your motherboard? If not, there are still a few ATI 9200 series cards in PCI format, which would work as well.
