I have a friends hard drive here which is almost dead. They were paranoid and read about data encryption and have done this.

Windows does not detect the drive. However I have booted up Knoppix and it detects the drive but 99% of the data is not visible, I assume from the encryption.

IS there anyway possible to save the My Docs folder???

You'd have to know what they used to encrypt the data. If you see the My Docs folder, and just not open it, maybe it can be burned to a CD in its encrypted state. Then install the encryption software on a functional PC and try to decrypt the data on the CD. If you can't even see the My Docs folder, then remove the hard drive from the PC and try to hook it up to a functional PC running Windows and again try installing the encryption software and try to read the drive. There's a chance that the encryption software runs under Linux and you may be able to add it as a plug-in to the Knoppix CD before burning it, but this is a bit beyond my scope of Linux knowledge....

You can go for data recovery software to recover your data.May be it will help you to recover your data. There are many software available.I have use Stellar Phoenix data recovery software. It helps me to recover my data.Firstly download the free demo version and check weather your data is recoverable or not.Once you see the preview of your data download the full version and get your data back.

    Hope this will help you.
