I have a laptop with the mousepad built on to the front of the keyboard. I also have a wireless mouse which i like to use. Pad is annoying always hitting it. How do I disable it. Have looked under control panel /mouse but no luck..Thanks

Look around in the computer's BIOS. I found an option to use ps2 or usb mouse or both on my Dell 600m. If you don't find anything, post the model number and maybe we can find out how to do it.

    And Welcome to MajorGeeks! :D

My model # is M5312, a laptop. Still trying to find out how to shut off the mouse pad, so I can just use my wireless mouse. Thanks. Afraid of the BIOS

on several laptops, the touch pad is disabled by pressing "Fn" and one of the function keys- ex Fn and F7 on my acer.

    1. Click the touchpad icon in the tray.
    2. Select Pointing device properties.
    3. Click on device settings.
If there is no way to turn the device off, then set the sensitivity very low (1%, if possible). That means, it would take a very strong tap on the touchpad for anything to happen.

Sounds like your right but what in the world is a task tray. When I look up in operators manual it says Task tray Icon( looks like a desktop computer) . That is nowhere on the keypad . Control panel doesn't have it either. I've used computers a long time and know my way around but this is so unintiutive its pathetic!

plodr means the area next to the clock on the lower-right corner of your desktop. Is there an icon for the touchpad?

they are talking about the icon by your clock (1st screenshot below). try to see if there is anything in there that you can disable it. my compaq actually has a button, so i can turn it off and on (i like that feature). if you don't see anything in there about turning it off, try placing the mouse curser over that icon by the clock and see what it is called (or maybe you can right click and see what it's called?). anyway, once you know what it's called, go to your start menu and type msconfig in the run box, a box should come up (2nd screenshot), select "selective startup", then select the "startup" tab at the top, look for the name of that program (what the icon was), or something similar, click apply, save, then you will have to reboot. if that wasn't it, then enable that other program, and try again. g/l - sos

you might want to check your startup folder in all programs, start, all programs, startup folder.
