    Hi

This is my first post so please take it easy on me! I have done the procedure on this website about removing all malware etc by using RootRepeal, SUPERAntiSpyare, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, and CC Cleaner. I have also done hijack this and attached it to the next post...

Right, I am having problems with a process called ~e5.0001 when I start up Medieval 2: Total War, Rome Total War and The Sims 2. When I start any of these games my computer slows down enormously. I have looked at Task Manager and can see that ~e5.0001 is taking up around 30% of the CPU usage which slows the entire computer down and games play very slow.

I have searched the net on how to get rid of this problem but nothing has worked. So I am trying here because I found a post about a similar problem in which someone looked at their hijack this log, asked them to remove some things and the ~e5.0001 stopped being a problem.

All I can find out about the ~e5.0001 is that it's some kind of disk verification built into the games.

    My have the following system...
    Windows XP Home SP3 (32-bit)
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz (two of)
NVidia GeForce 8800 GT, 1Gb RAM
2 Gb of RAM (on PC)

So I hope this is all the information that you need and look forward to removing all the rubbish from my PC.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello again!

I have just uninstalled my anti-virus...(The Shield Deluxe 2009) and then started up Medieval 2 Total War. Guess what...?

It now works fine! Guessing this anti-virus doesn't like this process. Now I'll have to look into getting a new anti-virus! :S

    Thanks anyway all!

    Hi

Yes my AV was updated before. I have now uninstalled it and I'm looking for a new one which won't cause this error.

It is, it's a part of EA's DRM scripts and software they put on the game disks to keep you from copying it and selling it to someone. It has a history of conflicting with various security suites, firewalls, and AVs, unfortunately.

Avast and AVG 9 a re both good AVs that I haven't heard of causing this. I have Avast on my gaming PC, and no problems in Vista or 7.

    Thanks Mimsy

Would you recommend the free versions or purchase them?

I've never paid a cent for them. The free versions are a full AV, and as good or better than most you have to pay for. AVG 9 Free Version comes with spyware protection as well, which Avast doesn't. AVG9 is what I have on the 7 system right now. Avast goes on the XP computers.

Agree with Mimsy, I prefer Avast because I find it uses less resources than AVG.... and it talks to you :-D
