    hello all :)

we had an earthquake the other day and as a result, power was lost to the ext. usb hdd mid write >.<

inevitably all the files are now corrupt (super >.<)

said files i can live without'ish but, i don't want to loose the rest off my data from the hdd while i run the scan disk util. 'chkdsk'

the last time chkdsk ran, i lost a lot of data (around 65G RE: majorgeeks post "windows ate my hard drive and now it makes a burping noise" back in april of this year - i think)

    anyway, moving swiftly on ...

i guess that i am gonna ask three things here ...

    1) what happens if i don't run chkdsk? will i get a knock at the door from Mr. Scan disk dot com saying "eh, i see you still haven't ran that scan yet"

    2) is it possible to delete corrupted files from with in the windows environment, live so to speak?

    3) if i do need to run chkdsk, what can i do as damage limitation before it runs?

i know exactly where the corrupted files are on the drive and how many of them there are, size etc...

the drive is 500G and full of really important stuff (i hear you....bkup) i have a 250G hdd doing just that (which really butts my nut as i don't normally yield the tag "billy loads o' cash") but where does it end? back-ups of back-ups that back-up the back-ups? meh >.< (sorry, rant over)

some warm words of advice please if anyone has a moment?

    thanks

    sophia

Can't help with your hard drive problem, but if I was you, I'd spring for a UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) asap, to stop being affected by powerouts for whatever reason, in the future.

    Wikipedia link.

Hope you retrieve your data OK. :major Bazza

hmmm, maybe you are right there bazza ... thanks

i dont want to retrieve the data though, i want to delete the corrupted files but with the confidence that chkdsk is not going to remove the uncorrupted data files that are important ... like it did last time ...

... ckdsk ran a riot and removed 65G of files without me being able to stop it

    this isn't what i want of course so re my three questions;

    1) what happens if i don't run chkdsk to delete/remove the corrupted files?

    2) is it possible to delete corrupted files from with in the windows environment, live so to speak?

    3) if i do need to run chkdsk, what can i do as damage limitation before it runs?

    thanks, sophia

What type of files are corrupted, or is it random types?
You should / might be able to right click on a file and then select delete and get rid of them. Bazza
