I'm trying to find the easier method for backing up my computer.

At first, I simply manually copied the files that I wanted to back up to a flash drive.

However, I'm now pushing the limit on a 2 gig flash drive, and it takes at least an hour(probably more) to back things up. I also have to delete everything on the flash drive and then copy a fresh copy of everything because if I don't, then sure, things that have been modified will be updated, but things that I've deleted will be left alone and I'll still have a copy of them on the flash drive.

So now, I decided to try using Windows Backup and Restore center to create a backup to a DVD. FAR from what I was looking for. At first I thought it would be better. It would be a more complete backup, etc. First, and I guess I should have been more mindful of what I told it to backup, it takes up way too much space. I mean, these DVDs are what, 4.7 gig? and it's already on the second one? And it's taking forever..

So my question is.. What's the FASTEST method for backing things up and making sure everything is correctly backed up, eg. files that are no longer on the computer are deleted from the backup.

Second hard drive? Raid maybe? Tell me what you think... I'm getting to the point where this flash drive doesn't have enough room and doesn't do the job fast enough.

For starters have a look at the "Backing Up Your Computer" guide.
It will help you as you decide what your needs are, whether you just need to backup specific files or your entire hard drive.

I have Acronis True Image ( it's not free ) and I can restore my hard drive to a new system and be back up and running in a matter of hours rather than days. As its name says, it creates an image of your hard drive. Upon installation you can partition your hard drive and create a "Secure Zone". You can restore from there or you can create a "Bootable Rescue Media". It is well worth the $50.00 if you value your data as I do.

Other than that, you can have a look at the freeware backups here at M.G.'s

    Heres the "Top Freeware Picks"
