    Would getting a separate ethernet card boost my network and internet performance rather than onboard ethernet? (Desktop, not notebook)

    Nope, = basic answer. None whatsoever. You may, under the most extreme games, notice a very marginal improvement of CPU power. like 1 frame per second... Spend your money on something else, unless everyone else on the network has a Gigbit network card and you don't.
