I decided to put Linux on my computer. I've installed Fedora and am now trying to install all the programs I need.

Right now I'm am lost with how to get Eclipse to work. I'm a real Linux n00b, so I don't even know what I should be trying to do.

I've downloaded and installed the Java SDK from Sun and I have downloaded and extracted the Eclipse files. But I can't seem to figure out how to get the stupid program to run. Any help?

Did you try to run the Eclipse Executable file in the directory and get it to run at all?

Nothing happened when I tried to run the "eclipse" file. Nothing as in nothing. No error message, no activity. Just nothing.

    Aha, I've got it!

I went to the terminal and tried to run "./eclipse" It gave me an error about not being able to find the Java RE in the specified location. So I had to edit $PATH and put the path to the RE in there. Now, it works. :D

    Hey Genius Boy,
I looked at that eclipse webpage, and can't quite figure out what its about.
Is it for people who are into developing software?
If not, what does the thing do?

Eclipse is an open source IDE (Integrated Developement Environment) which is funded and supported by IBM. It is primarily intended for programming in Java; however, it looks like they are adding furthur functionality for C and C++ in the near future. As it is, you can install some modules and get it to compile both those languages, but it is something that you have to do on your own.

Basically, the documentation on the website sucks. It is, however, an excellent environment to work in if you have to do any programming. I'd highly recommend it if you are doing any sort of Java coding.

    Thanks for the info, GeniusBoy.
Right now its a stretch to write a bash shell script, and I've yet to get a hold on tagging up an HTML page.
But in the future, who knows?
