EdubuntuSystem monitor, Zombie??

Hi,

I was trying to sign on to the internet with firefox but was repeatedly denied.
I could hear my hard drive working hard, and the light was steady on.

I checked the System Monitor it showed process "sh", status "Zombie", CPU "0"
Is this program a threat or part of edubuntu?

Why was my hard drive working so hard without permission?
How do I know if my system has been hacked?

Zombie doesn't mean the same thing in Linux, as it does in Windows, where it refers to something malicious.

A zombie process in the Unix world is a process that is sleeping, or not doing anything.

Is edubuntu in the habit of defraging when usage is low?

No. Is this a laptop? It does index for searching.

 

yes its a laptop, Toshiba satellite P-100 MA2
I just find it strange that the hard drive randomly runs that hard with no user input.
It seems to happen when the internet is open.
When it happens I turn the wireless radio off, it quickly slows and stops.
I am not 100% sure if CPU is also affected at the same time.

The laptop is a Dual Boot Windows xp pro media & edubuntu 8.04

 

I have NO idea if this is still an issue with 8.04.

I guess that would depend on who wrote the OS *nix huh?
