My question is how long can you make an eithernet cable?
If I make one that is 4 to 5 feet in length works if 10 foot long never connects.
Thought when i made it the connection of the plug and internal wires may be bad checked with my meter and that is good wire coordination is correct cut teminal made new one at 9 foot same as 10 foot as soon as I go to about 4 or 5 foot everything ok.
I see at my work that they run cat 5 cable through out the whole plant at lengths that I could fill the back of my truck with.
Is there something I need to do this? I would like to run to my garage is why Im trying to make one so long.. Thanks for any help...

Hi BBCCarguy, My home network connects through 75 feet of cat5 so I know you can go that far and I don't have any thing other than the computers, cable, router and modem. Are you connecting from computer to computer? You may need a crossover cable if there is no router in between.

You can make a cat5 of lengths up to 100 meters or 328 feet. Just like someone mentioned... depending on what type of devices you're going in between, the cable may need to be a crossover.

One of the biggest problem in Home Networks are Cables that are crimped by inexperienced crimpers.

They have very high rate of failure, and even if they work they usually reduce the Network’s Speed.

The way to go about it is to use solid core Cat6 for the log runs and terminate them into a Wall mounted Keystones.

There are good inexpensive None Punch Keystone that can be used by the None Pros.

From the Wall Plug use regular commercial patches, they are so cheap these days that it is rather silly to get involved in crimping.

Thanks for the multiple replies, I should have gave more info on this sorry
I was trying to go from router to computer,
The other cables I have made are woking great, but I know that dont mean anything and thanks for the quick links about the parts they are very cheap and a better way to go as you said, I'll be doing some ordering soon I see.
The one bad thing about being new to all of this is not knowing where to go for the stuff you need. Thanks to all again.

To use Ethernet, you need an Ethernet cable. They look like phone cable, but they are not.
No, you don't need a modem, but you do need Ethernet hardware on your computer. All modern computers have it built in. The speed depends on what kind of Ethernet hardware your computer has.
