After a storm here last night, there was temporary power outage (all clocks and vcrs flashing). My pc is un UPS, but four others all turned off. Now one box keeps rebooting, checking disc for errors (bad shutdown), then rebooting again and again. I can boot into safe mode. What do I need to do?

Another box won't come on at all. Seems dead in the water. What could be fried or what needs toi be reset to get it to boot up?

    Any ideas?

Thanks for replying. I will try that on the box that keeps rebooting when I get back later (gotta run now).

Any idea about the box that won't boot at all. It acts like it's getting no power (power supply fried?) No apparent burnt smell.

On the box that won't power up, you get anything at all? No fans, no lights, no post, no beep?

That box was completely dead! Possibly power supply. It was only a couple of weeks old. I already got another one and will just return this one in it's place. I swapped out my HD, since I haad already used it quite a bit.

As far as the one that keeps rebooting, I went to try armstrong's suggestion, but fsutil was not available. Did you mean to run that at a cmd shell in safe mode, or to boot to a command prompt? I tried in safe mode but could not use that command.

    Thanks,
    Scott

    run from the recovery console.

    fsutil

I Googled fsutil, and apparently that is an XP utility. My pc that keeps rebooting is running Win2K. Any suggestions?

run these two command from the command console:

    chkntfs /x c:

    chkdsk /f /r c:

    reboot

I went into system properties/advanced/startup & recovery and turned off automatically reboot under system failures. The pc booted up normally. I rebooted to see if it would boot up again, and it did. I guess it's fixed now, but I don't know why it got so whacked from a bad shutdown. Hope it doesn't happen again.

    Thanks for the feedback,
    Scott

It's a registry thing, after a 'Bad' shutdown Windows wants to do a chkdsk and sometimes the value in the registry doesn't reset; and you get chkdsk every boot.

so what should I fix in the registry, and is it safe to leave the setting I made in the system failure area of the advanced system properties as I left it?

BTW, now I can't get into the Windows Update page. It just loads a blank page and says "Done" I tried reinstalling the scripting (as per their site), but still have not solved this latest problem. I didn't have that problem before the crash.

    Thanks,
    Scott

    1.Edit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
    2.Change the BootExecute entry from:

    autocheck autochk * /......... AND-CHANGE-TO autocheck autochk *

Windows Update, try clearing your internet cache or run CCleaner.
