    Dear All,
My apologies for any unintentional thread hijacking (Chaslang comment), as for searcing the forum, when I click the link in "before you post for help search etc etc" I get a screen saying "This page is not available" that is why I put my message on what i considered to be a relevant link.
OK, somehow or other Elite bar has latched onto my system:
Windows 98 on Packard Bell "club"
    AMD K6 3D processor
    189 MB RAM
    I have installed;
    AntiVir 6 v6 27.00.03 vdf & AVrep.dll updated 1/9/04
    Zone Alarm v5.1.011.00
    ccleaner 1.11.062
    Spybot snd v 1.3
BHODemon 2.0 (I had a problem downloading the update)
    Browser Hijack blaster v 1.0
    Hijack this v 1.98.0
    Adaware 6.0 Ref file 01R339 26/08/2004 with Vx2 plugin
    CWShredder 1.59.1
no indication was given that elite bar got onto my system by any of these programmes.
I have read the notice about basic spyware, trojan and virus removal.
I don't know how to disable system restore- does it exist on Win98? In the windows folder, there is a partially shaded folder named "sysbackup" does this have the same function?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Sammo

When on the main page of the forum (not within a thread), on the top right of your screen right under the page numbers, there is a button title "Search this forum".

That is how you search for info.

I don't think it will matter what OS you have. Similar steps will be followed (other than anything related to a system restore which Win98 does not have).

Have you followed all the steps in this Sticky thread < READ ME FIRST: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal >

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

After doing the above, we will proceed to the next step if your problem still exists.

    Once again, thank you chaslang

Yes, I did follow all the steps in MA's basic spyware, trojan and virus removal. And yes, I respect all you peoples' superior knowledge of computers and associated problems and how to solve them. I managed to get rid of Elitebar, after scanning in safe mode with the various programmes I have downloaded, but I fell the most important thing was being able to "defrag" which I couldn't do in normal mode. I was relieved after rebooting not to find Elite in my system files.
    Thanks again
    Regards

Are you still having problems defragging your hard disk? There are lots of reasons that can happen. Typically it is due to an application that is running that periodically accesses the disk. Almost any virus application and other scanning application can cause this. Also if you do anything during the time defrag is running (like open another application) that can cause a disk write and defrag will restart. On Microsofts Website in the Knowledge Base articles there are articles about these kind of problems.

    Sorry Chaslang,
I didn't express myself too clearly; I was unable to defrag in normal mode, but was able to in safe mode, so far, elitebar has not come back.

Sammo, Yes I understand that. I just meant it should be possible in normal mode too. If you can do it in safe mode it just confirms my suspicion that something that is running in normal mode is causing the problem. If you try shutting down applications using Task Manager (in normal mode), you will probably find what is preventing the defrag.

    Hi Chaslang,

When I want to defrag, I do Alt+Ctrl+Del, and end tasks individually, I disable screensaver , pause task manager (I don't actually use Task Manager, as my computer is not switched on all the time) and up until I "caught" the elite bar bug, I never had trouble defragging.
I follow all the advice in MG, I update my protection programmes every week, generally on Sundays, I always run ccleaner after an Internet session, and Adaware, followed by Antivir6.
to double check I run CWShredder.
    Anyway, thanks for everything
    Regards
    Sammo
