I was checking out at the store the other day, scanning the covers of the magazines for something interesting. People had a picture of a young lady on the cover, she looked vaguely familiar. It was Elizabeth Smart, some may remember her, others may not. I had a cell phone when she was abducted, one of the first with interenet.. nothing spectacular, but I followed everything I could about her story with that phone. I bought the books, watched the movies.. NOW, what, 7-8 years later, the trial is finally underway. Personally, I don't think there should be a trial, the type of person who does this kind of thing.. There's no reason to keep them around, what good are they to society?

Anyhow, here's the link to the story. I can't imagine that she's doing fantastic, but you can only hope for the best, ya know?

I remember, some time after she came home, the enquirer ran something about her, with a cover picture. I was upset enough about it to write them a letter. I don't know why they'd have targeted the family at all. I thought it was ignorant. They responded, but I've lost the letter they sent me. It was very nice, but didn't make anything better..

I'll more than likely remember the story for quite a while, being that I followed it so closely. You can't not feel bad for her, but at least she made it home. Probably most, never do.

Yes, Pax, I remember it too... Why a trial now, indeed.. Oh, I agree, no reason to keep them around anyway...

She sure is a cutie, and also, what goes on at night, after the lights go out. That girl has some memories that no child should have... the mind is a complex piece of work, for sure, hopefully, her mind has blocked it out for her.. Sometimes, when something horrific happens to a child, the mind will block it out, kinda like put it to the back.. Later on, however, it may re-surface, but for the most part, I hope she does OK.. Like you had stated, most don't make it back home... She is a lucky one..;)

C##p Pax! This is the worst of all crimes. Being a parent and reading this always gets one to think what if
My opinion would always be biased to say the least. Kill the perp fry/lethal injection, hang, what not..PERIOD
I don't care how sick in the head he is or what trauma etc etc he suffered as
a child. Courts hearings and the law should not be for sick animals.
I may get some flack for this, but I'll take it.
PS: edit to add. God forbid I was the parent with a gun in hand with the perp in sight..
I'd claim temp insanity and blow him away

I agree. Sik, I'll take on the naysayers with you on this. Trials should only be held for those in which retribution can be attained. As soon as he left that house with her, judge and jury should have been the first person to lay eyes on them.

The search party should have been armed, and able to act. It's a shame we have hospitals for this type of person. There's no bringing them back into society, so get rid of them. At least they may make decent fertilizer.

When you walk into a courtroom facing a crime like this, it should only be to tell you when & how you're going to die. You should then be placed in a cell, where the only light comes through a tiny hole in the wall. When you look through the wall, all you can see is a clock ticking down the minutes left in your life.

If you kill, or (do what happened to her nightly)...You die, soon. It's a shame that in the US, the leading cause of death for people on death row, is old age.

sorry for bringing out the censors.

Don't mean to hijack PAX! The law more often than not fails to impress.
Here's a YT. My Grand dad who waited for 20 plus yrs for justice.
Passed away soon after the verdict - peacefully in his sleep.
