Pulled the power supply and took it to Circuit City where they plugged in into the tester and it tested fine.
Looks like it is either the Motherboard or the Power On switch.

I'd like to verify which one it is and get the correct replacement part.

Motherboard is labeled 'Intel' wih a barcode sticker with
    '40001147-0254B (EM) 148886' on it.
There is a second sticker underneath the first with
    'TGSR42016820 AA C74803-200' on it.
The front of the case has a 'intel inside Celeron D' sticker on it.

The wires from the front panel plug into the lower left of the Motherboard where the 3 card slots are in the upper left and the CPU is on the right hand side directly above the two RAM slots.

There are three sets of two wires but they are not labeled. They are Red & White, Blue & White and Black & White.

On the Motherboard they plug on to pin set labeled 'Front Panel HDR' (I think)where there are five pins in the left hand column and then only 4 pins in the right hand column.

I'd like to identify which pins are used for: HDD LED
    Power LED
    Power Switch

On the 5 pin column, the Red & White (1 &2) and Black & White (3 & 4)wires are plugged in - the fifth pin is open.
On the 4 pin column, the Blue & White (1 & 2) are plugged in.

I tried to attach a couple of pics to show what is what inside the case but they are apparently too big - they are 1.24 Mb and 1.10 Mb and I can email them if required.

So, is there a reference as to which of these pins is used for the Power Switch?

Secondly, if the Power Switch is bad - can someone point me to a good source for a replacement Motherboard.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!!!

Thanks Tim but - been there & done that - had a >20 min chat with the on-line tech support guy.

All I really got from him was the phone number for their parts dept to call on Monday.

I cannot get the T2896 User Guide PDF file to open - I keep getting a 'Page Not Found' error.......

Not very much from eMacines to go on at all...............

black & white is the power switch. I'm having the same issue, replaced power supply no help. If switch is bad, can't find replacement. The PDF file opens now at eMachine but doesn't cover the button.

Hey folks why do you say it must be the motherboard?

Lots of reasons why a pc won't start.

You can test the power on switch easily enough - it is only a momentary on contact switch so all you have to do is momentarily short across the pins. I use a lead with min croc clips if I'm in a good mood otherwise a small screwdriver. You need no other front panel leads to start the pc.

Send a PM with your email address (don't post it here) if you want to copy me a couple of pics.

Thanks, I forgot to mention that, but been there tried that. If not power supply and not power switch, not much left.

Presumably you've also tested the processor, memory and seating of these components and forgot to mention these as well?

You should really start your own thread and list the symptoms and tests you have made. your problem may be different.

    Most E-Machines die young.

Howdy! I know this is an old post and I will start my own if I can't find the basic knowledge I am looking for in other posts. I am brand new to hands on computer hardware. Have this same emachine with the same symptoms. I did try a trusted power supply and tested the momentary on of the power switch. That's all I know how to do so far. I actually just signed up on the forum in hopes of PMing Studiot in hopes of finding a mentor to get me started by walking me through a few of the tests you described and possibly explaining some of the common reasons a computer won't start. Anyway, if there are any folks out there willing to take a complete newbee under their wing please give me a shout! Thanks, Buddy

    yak_king, welcome to MajorHeeks.
Go here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22 click the New Thread button near the top left and repost your problem. Each person here has his/her own thread, even if it might be the same computer mentioned elsewhere in all the posts.

Someone will be along to tell you other steps to try to troubleshoot the computer's failure to power on.
