I recently purchased a 1gb ram pc2700 333. for my e machines t2984 comp and cannot get the bios to recognize it as installed, in fact it will not boot if I install it at shut down like one should. however if I install it while the comp is running It will show up using cpuz as installed memory.

Any ideas on how to correct this issue.. (since e machines refuses to support its own product) The ram is meant for an hp/gateway which is e machines... so this does not make sense.

    Help please

First off: NEVER install or uninstall hardware while the computer is running.
Secondly: Are you sure you pushed it in ALL the way, and locked it in?

yes I am sure,,, that is what does not figure do everything correct and nothing but a bleeping red light and comp won't start.

do the wrong thing and cpuz recognizes its there just not the comp or bios itself. thats what makes no sense.

    thanks for the reply

curious would the problem be part of the os? or is it more likely bios? this just seems weird to me.

    Thanks

What is the difference between registered and unregistered ram

And could this the reason it doesnot work?

No. Hp and Compaq are one company; eMachines and Gateway are part of Acer, and hence a different company.

    non-ECC, I hope.

Registered or buffered RAM means the same thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_memory
I didn't see anything as to whether you needed registered or unregistered RAM.

Yes, it could and if your new module is a registered one that's why it's not working. eMachines desktop computers take unregistered non-ECC parts.

Now I'm going to go back to being absolutely shocked that your computer survived hot-swapping the modules. Wow.

Hmmmm, Well at least I didn't pay the 70.00 that walmart wanted for the ram so I don't feel to bad. But now that i know the difference between R and U memory I will be happy to purchase the correct one.

This machine works fine even with the "hot swapping" Was a bit tricky to do in the crowded conditions of the memory area.

Xp has just too much crap in it now that slows a comp down. programs now require a lot of ram... So I must upgrade the ram at least.

    Thanks for your help.

    1GB PC2700 non-ECC on Newegg

I sorted them in order with the highest rated at the top of the list. The only brands on that list I have personal experience with are Kingston, Crucial, and Corsair, and all three are high quality parts with good support and life-time warranty.

Thanks for your help.. I am building the comp up for several reasons really...
For my fiancee's use and so that when I finally give it to a family member they will be surely surprised at it's capabilities....

The family member has an issue with her husband trying to control everything she does... In this case the most he could do is unplug the comp....

I will be the administrator on the machine so he cannot access it... I will also set up remote access in case of any problems to the contrary... This would enable me to end his reign of terror and irresponsibility.

Funny thing is he is a network admin for a major news paper and has no fundamental idea on how to bypass passwords and the like so I have no issues there. He is less knowledgeable than I.. and for me being ultimately new this is a plus.. Maybe age has a factor in learning after all. Me 35 him 50+.

    thanks again for your input.
