Are there any programs that I can use to keep local / archived copies of emails from my yahoo account? I have many important emails on their server and if something happens I need copies.

I have recently tried mailstore and it seems to do the job but I am wondering if there are others?

    Thanks,
    David

Are you using the free Yahoo! Mail account or a paid account? If you're using a free one, I'd upgrade to the paid account; I believe it costs $19.95 per year. The reason is that the paid account will work with an email client/program installed on your computer and, by using an email client, you can download the email to your hard drive. At that point, you could then proceed to backup those messages on some external storage media.

I do have a paid account. I have my email setup for IMAP. So, even if I were to use outlook or something the email is still on the server. If something happens to the emails on server then they are gone in outlook.

With IMAP, the messages are on the server AND on your hard drive. Now, if you meant to say that messages on your hard drive would be deleted with an IMAP account if they were first deleted from the server, I would agree with you. However, you could establish a regular practice of backing up your Outlook messages in a separate location. Then, if messages were lost on the server due to a Yahoo! problem and this resulted in messages being deleted from your Outlook due to the synchronization feature of IMAP, you could restore your messages from the backup location.

Alternatively, you could install another email client and create your email account in it as a POP account and set it to leave messages on the server. I believe this will work and would be a way to capturing your messages in a email client that won't be affected by the IMAP message synchronization; I'm assuming the email account can be used both as POP and IMAP at the same time but using different email clients. Messages in this account could also be backed up to an external medium.

I have tried using outlook and then dragging all the messages into another folder I created. It was awhile ago and don't remember what the problem was but I did run into some problems. I'll have to try again. In the meantime Mailstore seemed to work pretty well. Aside from backing up to their server online (which is what I don't like) I am able to export messages in EML format to outlook.

Open an account at either gmail or fastmail. Forward what you want to save to another email address. Both Gmail and fastmail have IMAP access meaning the emails stay on the server but you can also download a copy using an email program.

So, as my original question asked, can anyone recommend software aside from Mailstore?

http://www.gmx.com will allow you to import all your emails from other email addresses, as long as the other addresses are still active.
You can import up to 10 different email addresses, if I remember correctly.

Email is a very popular communication medium, in reality it has become the primary means by which organizations and individuals communicate with one another. Emails are used to conduct business, exchange contracts, and other important business documents are transported and delivered through email.

Email archiving is the best software for email storage and security.
