I was trying to send an email to someone at AOL and I'm on Earthlink. The mail was blocked every time I tried and returned from AOL stating that it was a 550 error. Contacted EL and was told that AOL blocks EL due to possible scamming. Did some reading on it and think I somewhat understand how it works.

Abuse Department at EL was supposedly working on getting AOL to release my address/IP (?) so I could send an email. Didn't work and then I was told the following: "When AOL receives a larger volume of mail than their servers can handle, mail messages can become either delayed or rejected entirely. Subsequently, the AOL mail servers will then only allow AOL-originating mail to come through during this peak traffic time.& This process is initiated with the domains that send the highest volume of mail messages to America OnLine's mail servers." What I wound up doing was opening a free email account with AOL, copied my letter into it and wallah, email went thru, no problems.

Wish I could just let it go, but I'd really like to have a little more info on the subject if anyone here can give me some. Thanks in advance.:)

Perhaps I should cancel EL and try another ISP. I've only had a few problems with EL/Roadrunner in 3 years and they were handled immediately and the Customer Service people were very considerate and helpful.:) Have cable, speed is fine and overall, very happy with them. Only problem I forsee now is having to use the AOL free mail to send messages which I guess is not such a big deal.

I think you handled it correctly ...except that the issue isn't with earthlink ...it's with aol ...another screw=up that aol will get dinged for ...tell your email friends to open account with other email providers. (hotmail , yahoo, etc):)

Have always done this, had AOL years ago and computer freezes were a daily occurrence. Since I've switched, they are few and far between. Thank you.:)
