Hey i just joined today, I'm a computer tech and i need help :( haha

I've been using major geeks for years to get tools and stuff, I love the website its great.

Ok so here's what im up against. I'm doing a job for a client who has a desktop running vista business 32bit. Now as far as im aware vista comes stock with " Windows Mail ". Whats happened is the OS got corrupted so i had to format the drive. I recovered all the data. Reloaded windows etc. But I cant import the emails back into Windows mail or into outlook 2007.

    Any ideas?

The Windows Mail data files are in C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail. If you can read the old disk just copy them to the new drive.

Aye, Yeah i've got all the data, sorry i didnt explain the situation too well haha.

I've copied all of the emails onto the HDD, He has 8gb's! worth. I can try and import with windows mail but it doesnt work :( Windows mail see's that the emails are there and gives me the option to import emails from windows mail or i think it calls it windows mail 7? Some of them it cant see, some it can & the ones it " imports " are just empty folders with what looks like Japanese writing.

Having said all this he is running vista at the moment, I'm building him a new PC with win 7 pro on it & he doesnt want office so i guess ill be using windows live mail. I imagine ill still have problems trying to import the old emails, I think i need to convert them? But if i cant get them back into the program they came outa! then i dont know haha, this is whats getting me. I've done plently of googling & basically nothing.

Just use copy and paste, not Import.

Try to C & P into exactly the same folder it came from. You would need to create the user account first of course and set the Windows Mail store folder to point to the correct folder. Tools > Options > Advanced > Maintenance

In addition to creating the Vista user account you will also need to set up the user's email account in Windows Mail. It's a standard POP3 setup, much like Outlook Express. The only issue that might arise is we may need to change the folder's permissions before being able to access the mail store in Windows Mail, but if you set the email account up first and then copy in the folders hopefully it will be OK.
