I am having a problem with my mother's computer.

First, she has a compaq (that's another story), but using Thunderbird or Outlook Express (either one), I can't download her email from the server. Both programs give timeout errors. I can access her email account over the internet through a browser, but can't get it through her email programs.

I have tried deleting all accounts and starting over and get the same problem.

I have disabled all email scanners, firewalls, etc.

Still no luck, anyone ever run into that problem?

It's just wierd that last week everything was fine, not nothing works. Her computer has slowed to a crawl, even though it was never really fast, but it has been really slow lately. I am almost ready to do a system restore, but want to find the problem first.

First, run a thorough check for viruses and spyware.

Then, assuming you have Windows XP, enable the windows firewall, then completely yank the security software (Antivi, antispam, firewall, everything). If Email working, reinstall the security stuff, likely it will keep working.

    Just a thought! :)

A good MS article about generic email client troubleshooting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813514/en-us

    Best of luck!

Ok heres the palm, start run cmd (if xp/2000) or command for anything else, now type in telnet mail.hermailserver.com 25 then hit ok, give me the info, also try telnet mail.hermailserver.com 110 then enter, then in the prompt that comes up type usr username enter then it should say pass required, the type pass password, then should say some many message,

Also, try increasing your time out setting. In OE go: tools/accounts/properties/advanced; then slide the server time out slider to the right.

Well, thanks for the suggestions, but nothing worked.

I removed all firewalls, security programs, antivirus, restarted no luck.

I removed and reinstalled internet programs and account settings, no luck.

Ended up having to do a system restore to factory settings and that cleared the problem. I also scanned for spyware before I did that and didn't come up with anything.

I got everything going now, but it is a pain to have to reset everything.
