What would be a light yet powerful email client? I'm sick of outlook...

how light is light... and how powerful is powerful.. give us a better idea at what you're looking for in the program and we'll see if we can find you one that matches your wish.

not quite ;) outlook has a distinct advantage when it comes to features over mozilla. But for light, it's on the money.

what are the advantages you speak of?

no offense flea.. but you have to be blind to miss the overwhelming features of outlook over mozilla's rather small client.

If you want BASIC mail features, I said Moz was a good choice; However, if you want features then outlook is by far the best client for mail across the board. Lotus Notes is the only other one that comes close and only in version 6.

Your basics are there in outlook and Moz, but can you do scheduling? no. journals? no. Hierachical history tracking of email? no. VBA and office integration/automation? no. The list goes on.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS -- what's the beef

Can someone tell me what I'm missing about Outlook Express (or Outlook or whatever)?

What's the "problem" so many people have with it? Is it a memory hog? Does is not prove usefule somehow? Is it not "compatible" with something everyone wants to use?

    I don't get it?

Re: OUTLOOK EXPRESS -- what's the beef

IMHO people's problem with Outlook Express (and remember there is a HUGE difference betwen 'Outlook Express' and 'Outlook') is that it is a Microsoft product -which is to say that many people dislike it just because it is made by a company that a lot of people love to hate (and maybe they have good reason...maybe not).
*My* 'problem' with OE (Outlook Express) is that it handles binaries badly and doesn't have default settings that make it friendly to a lot of people's idea of 'Newsgroup etiquette'.
Having said that: I use OE for all of my Newsgroup usage (having changed a few of the settings in it's options).
I actually really like OE for Newsgroup access -but there are many who will tell you that you need a specific News-reading Client. -and if you are someone who uses Binaries a lot -or don't like going into the Options menu in your programs, they may be right.
I use 'Outlook' as my *main* email client because of it's scheduling/contacts/calendar capabilities....-and I use OE for Newsgroups and accessing my Hotmail account because it is small, fast and usefull. -I even use OE for my *limited* use of Binaries.
If I were an avid Binary user I'd probably use a different client but OE serves me well for my usage.
    -yours,
    522.

You can secure Outlook quite easily. I've never, ever had a virus infect me through email.
Lets not forget the biggest problem with viruses that come through email.. the user that opens them ;)

    Thanks fiver!

Thanks for your thorough and quick reply -- now I am well informed, and that's what I come here for. Hopefully it's also helped someone else out too. :D

I recently quit using Outlook because it just seemed so bloated and quirky. It would open very slowly, take forever to load the inbox, and constantly give me error messages.

I switched to Outlook Express, which is wonderful for what I do, because it opens everything quickly and never gives me error messages. Since Cindy just got a new Palm Pilot, we use Palm Desktop for our schedule, calender, reminder notes, etc, and all our needs are met. We have no need of Outlook since we got the Palm Desktop.

Together with Spam Bully for Outlook Express (available here at Major Geeks for 30 bucks) we are FINALLY happy with our email!

    Hope this helps.

Your symptoms are text book of a corrupted PST file.

I ran repair several times, would that have fixed it?

  16. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

repair on the PST or a repair on Outlook?

If on PST, sometimes yes, somtimes no.
Most of the time I end up exporting and making a new PST and then importing.

I would just go to Help/Repair and insert the Office disk. I don't even know what PST is.... :)
